Whether you are learning about plants or animals use SCIENCE TOOLS such as binoculars and a magnifying lens to observe and study different organisms (plants and animals) in your environment. Using their science notebooks, let students sketch (draw) their observations with and without the science tools. Then compare their drawings. Which drawings shows more detail?
Each season repeat this idea in their science notebooks. Compare observations from season to season. Make sure to put the DATE on each observation.
Discuss the appropriate times to use each science tool.
Remind students that a magnifying lens helps you see things that are very close but very small. Binoculars help you see things that are far away.
