Dinosaur Craft, Books, and Song

Whereas we are in the middle of our reptile study, I though this would be a perfect opportunity for kids to learn about dinosaurs (a favorite subject of kids everywhere).

Dinosaurs ruled the Earth from 230 to 65 million years ago before becoming extinct. Even today scientists are unsure why dinosaurs no longer exist, although there are many interesting theories.

A popular dinosaur is Stegosaurus. He was a large plant-eater that walked on 4 legs. He had two rows of plates and spikes on his back and tail. He also had a small head.

Craft Activity

Our arts and crafts project will be to paint a Stegosaurus on a t-shirt and/or tote bag using a stencil.

Materials
  • T-shirt
  • tote bag
  • stencil
  • fabric paint
  • paint brush or sponge brush
  • cardboard, oaktag, etc.

Directions
  • Place a piece of cardboard inside the T-shirt. (The fabric paint will probably bleed through the front of the shirt.)
  • Place the stencil on top of the shirt (or tote bag) in the desired location.
  • Use a paint brush or sponge brush to paint inside the stencil.
  • Remove the stencil carefully.
  • Leave the cardboard inside the shirt.
  • Move the shirt carefully to a place where it can dry for approximately 24 hours.
  • Have students put on the shirts and read some awesome dinosaur books.
  • Put dinosaur books in the dinosaur tote bag for traveling to the beach, etc.

The T-shirts and other products can be bought at Michael's, A.C. Moore, or another crafts store (T-shirts usually 2 for $5.00).

    Dinosaur Books

Here is a sampling of some of the many awesome dinosaur books for kids.

Dinosaurs Sing Along Activity Book with CD: Songs That Teach Dinosaurs (Sing Along Activity Books)

I want to comment on the best part of this CD. There are 11 songs for children to listen to.  Song #8 "I am Stegosaurus" is just wonderful. My students in ALL grades from pre-school to Grade 5 have LOVED, LOVED, LOVED this song! They loved listening to it over and over. They loved singing it to anyone who would listen!
Unfortunately, the lyrics are not included with the book, so I had to listen several times (I don't do shorthand!) to get all the words down on paper. If you do get this book, shoot me an email or leave a comment and I will happily forward the words to you.

(The price on the back of the book and CD is $4.99 but I think I paid less than that. I bought it at a local store.)

    2. Kids sure do love dinosaurs, don't they? My favorite dinosaur activity I did with my son was when he made and "hatched" a dinosaur egg. (Check out my post about it here: http://deceptivelyeducational.blogspot.com/2011/05/if-i-had-pet-dinosaur.html.) Next time we sit down to learn about dinosaurs again, I'm thinkin' a little shirt-makin' is in order. Thank you for sharing!
