Our environment is filled with different types of lines from nature.
Here are some ideas to help children learn about the different types of lines.
~Click on the link below to view a slide show that explains the different types of lines.
Scholastic Study Jams: Types of Lines
~ Children can practice making the different types of lines with simple, inexpensive manipulatives such as the following:
Pencils
Horizontal Lines |
Vertical Lines |
Popsicle Sticks
Top: Parallel, Middle: Intersecting, Bottom: Perpendicular |
Small Craft Sticks
Top: Vertical, Middle: Horizontal, Bottom: Diagonal |
Tooth Picks

Parallel and Intersecting |
~ Students can look for examples of the different types of lines at home, school, or even outdoors in the environment. They could tally, count, list, sketch, or take photos of the lines.
~ They could also use old magazines and the internet to find pictures of the different types of lines. They could sort and/or label the pictures and use them to make a book, poster, or slide show about LINES.
