Summer Slide and Summer Games for Preschool to Grade 2

The summer slide refers to the learning loss that can occur when students are away from school during summer vacation and have limited opportunities to practice academic skills.

For young students, summer slide can affect several areas:

  • Reading skills: Children who do not read regularly over the summer may lose reading fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension skills.
  • Math skills: Basic arithmetic and problem-solving abilities often decline without practice, especially for elementary-age students.
  • Knowledge retention: Facts and concepts learned during the school year can become harder to recall when students return to class.
  • Achievement gaps: Research suggests that summer learning loss can be greater for students who have fewer access to books, educational programs, or enrichment activities, potentially widening academic gaps over time.
  • Confidence and motivation: Some students may feel less confident when they return to school and discover they've forgotten material, which can affect classroom participation and learning.

The effects vary from child to child. Students who stay engaged through activities such as reading, educational games, library programs, summer camps, family learning activities, or practicing math skills tend to experience less learning loss.

To help prevent summer slide, experts often recommend:

  1. Reading to children every day, even for 10-15 minutes.
  2. Practicing math through games, puzzles, or short exercises.
  3. Visiting libraries, zoos, aquariums, & museums and participating in summer reading programs.
  4. Encouraging hands-on learning through math manipulatives, science experiments, crafts, or nature exploration.
  5. Maintaining a balance between structured learning and free play.
While summer break provides important opportunities for rest, social development, and exploration, regular exposure to learning activities can help young students return to school better prepared for the next grade.

Frog Life Cycle, Word Search, & Other Fun Activities

Studying about frogs is lots of fun for preschool and elementary school children. The kids become so excited to learn about the stages of development for a frog. They become very interested in the frog's life cycle (egg, tadpole, froglet, and adult frog). This is a great lesson to teach metamorphosis.

Another fun activity is a frog crossword puzzle which can be used to introduce or review frog vocabulary.
Some of the 16 words included are amphibian, frog, froglet, herpetologist, metamorphosis, pond, river, tadpole, vertebrate, etc.

Frog Word Search

Both of these worksheets were recently uploaded to my website and are free for you to use with your students in school or at home. You can download them free from my website on the science page:
