Roman Numeral Activities for Kids

Learning about Roman Numerals is a fun math enrichment lesson for kids.

Some places that you might see Roman Numerals are on clocks, watches, and older historic buildings.

In ancient Rome, some of our letters were used to represent numbers.

      l   =  1

     V  =  5

     X  =  10

     L  =  50

     C  =  100

     D  =  500

     M  = 1,000

With just the letters l, V, and X, students can write numbers 1 - 48.

The kids might like to practice writing the numbers with colored pencils, crayons, or markers. They could also use manipulatives. Toothpicks and Gummi Worms work well. Popsicle sticks and Twizzlers (candy) could also be used.

Reading and Writing Roman Numerals

When the letters are the same in a series add their value.
(No letter repeats more than 3 times.)
Examples:

lll = l+l+l =3

XXX = X+X+X = 30

When a letter to the Right of a letter is of GREATER value, add the values of the letters.
Examples:

Vl =6

Vll=7

Vlll=8

When a letter is to the Left of a letter of GREATER value, subtract the values of the letters.
Examples:

lX =9

lXX =19

1, 2, 3

1, 2, 3, 4, 5

6, 7, 8, 9, 10

The kids might also enjoy making their own paper plate Roman Numeral clocks.

Addition Charts for Kids

Children need lots of practice with Addition Number Facts to develop fluency.

Repeated exposure to basic number facts helps students' brains develop a "memory relationship" with the facts. 

Working with number charts helps children develop Fluency with basic number facts and observe Patterns in numbers.

I whipped up 2 addition number charts last night that you might be able to use with your students. After children have completed the sheets (independently or with help) have them identify and describe the different patterns they observe on the chart(s).

Odd and Even Game for Kids

Here's a fun little Math Game for kids that uses inexpensive materials and helps kids practice the following skills:

• Addition
• Odd and Even
• Tallying

DICE

ERASER DICE (10 for $1.00 at Dollar Tree)

Materials

• dice (can be played with 2 or 3 dice)
• paper and pencil

Directions

• Students work with a partner.
• Player A is Even. Player B is Odd.
• Take turns rolling the dice.
• Together add the dice.
• If the SUM is even, player A gets 1 point. If the SUM is odd, player B gets 1 point.
• Tally each round.
• The first player to win 10 points is the winner.

Older children can multiply the dice instead of adding to make the game more challenging.

Zero, My Hero Song and Video for Kids

Numbers, Numbers, Numbers!

ZERO!!!

Numbers are soooooo important!  Young students may not appreciate the importance of  ZERO. They might think it means nothing. But this video from Schoolhouse Rock should change their mind and have them appreciate this very important number plus the tune is so catchy, you might not be able to get it out of your head! (I know I can't!)

Math Fun - Domino Fact Families

Here's a fun way for students to practice their addition and subtraction facts.

Materials Needed

• Dominoes
• Markers/Crayons/Etc.

Pass out a Domino to each child or have each child choose a Domino that they would like to work with.

Introduce or review Fact Families.

Explain to the students that the dots on each half of the domino will represent an Addend. The total dots will represent the Sum.

Using the domino, students should write the Fact Family illustrated on the Domino.

Make it an ART Activity as well as a MATH Activity. Let students use crayons, markers, etc.and decorate their work if desired.

Numbers and Operations Introduction and Word Search Puzzle

 Numbers, Numbers, Numbers!!!!!!

 And Operations!!!

This month's topic will be Numbers and Operations.

There's a HUGE wealth of vocabulary and concepts that students in PreK through Grade 12 need to learn.

Students need to understand numbers, number representations, number relationships, operations and their relationships, computation, and estimation. WOW!

Using a Graphic Organizer to see what students already know could be one way to begin this topic.

Another idea is to use a Word Search Puzzle to introduce some of the math vocabulary pertaining to Numbers and Operations that students will need. ( I have one for Elementary and Middle School.)
