Geometry - Line Symmetry


Symmetry is Everywhere!

Line Symmetry is when a figure can be folded so that the 2 parts are the mirror image of each other. The fold is the Line of Symmetry.



Lines of Symmetry can be:
  • vertical
  • horizontal
  • diagonal

Some figures, such as the heart above, have only 1 line of symmetry.
Some figures, such as the square below, have more than 1 line of symmetry.
The square has 4 lines of symmetry: 1 vertical, 1 horizontal, and 2 diagonal.

Suggested Activities

  • Have students fold and cut out simple symmetrical designs with a piece of paper and scissors.  (hearts, trees, rectangles, etc.)                                        
                                                                                        

                                                     

  • Have students explore their home or classroom to find objects that have symmetry.
                                 

  • Have students explore their outside environment to find objects that have either natural or man-made symmetry. Take a camera!
                                                                          
                                        
                                                        
  • Have students look in books, magazines, or catalogs for pictures of objects that have symmetry. How many can they find?                                              



                                                                     
  • Have students list and/or sketch shapes that have symmetry. (A circle has an infinite number of lines of symmetry.)                  
                    
                                                
  • Have students list and/or sketch Capital Letters of the Alphabet that have symmetry. (Then they could draw the line(s) of symmetry for the letters.)      
                                                                                      
                                                                            


  •  Have students write their own names and check each letter for symmetry. Which student has the most vertical lines of symmetry in his/her name? Which student has the most horizontal lines of symmetry in his/her name? 
 
  • Using art supplies, have students create something or make a craft that has symmetry. 
                                                           

                                                                          
                                                                                
                         
  • Have students read books about symmetry.

Geometry - What Are Similiar Figures?




Similar Figures are figures that have the same shape, but not necessarily the same size.

Suggested Activities:

  • Distribute different shapes to students (paper, plastic, etc.). Have students find the shapes that are similar.

  • Have students use manipulatives to create similar figures. They could use popsicle sticks, craft sticks, toothpicks, pretzels, etc.
                                                                               
                                                          
                                      
  • Have students use geoboards to create similar shapes. 

                                        
  • Have students use dotted grid paper to create similar shapes.

Geometry - What Are Congruent Figures?


Congruent Figures


Congruent figures are figures that have exactly the same shape and size.


The triangles (above) are congruent even though the 2nd triangle is turned upside down.

Great Math Book - G is for Googol

This is a really cool math book, mostly for students in grades 3 - 8, but I think adults will also enjoy reading it with kids.






The book teaches and entertains. The author, David M. Schwartz, is very witty and funny and the drawings and cartoons by the illustrator, Marissa Moss, are humorous and fun.

The book has lots of mathematical terms, concepts, and illustrations and is set up in alphabetical order. I would suggest picking one or two letters per day to read about with students. Each letter will lend itself to interesting discussions with your students.

The table of contents is great for choosing a topic to read and learn about. If you are looking for a GEOMETRY TOPIC I would choose any of the following:

  • D is for Diamond
  • E is for Equilateral
  • O is for Obtuse
  • R is for Rhombicosidodecahedron
  • S is for Symmetry
  • T is for Tessellate
  • W is for "When are we ever gonna use this stuff anyway?"
