Multiplication Concentration Games

Kids love Games and they have to learn all their Multiplication Facts so here's a MULTIPLICATION CONCENTRATION GAME to combine both.

I have a game for multiplication facts x2-x5 and another game for facts x6-x9.

Both games are in black and white so you can save your color ink. (It's soooo expensive!)

You can print them out on white computer paper or card stock or use color paper to match the holiday or season. Using the different colors of paper makes it look like a new game to the kids. I use red and green at Christmas, red and pink for Valentine's Day, green for St. Patty's Day, pastels for Easter, etc.

To grab your free copies of the Concentration Games just click on the link below to go to my website. Then click on Free Worksheets.

Arrays and the Commutative Property of Multiplication

The Commutative Property of Multiplication (sometimes called the Law of Order with younger kids) states that you can reverse the FACTORS in multiplication and still get the same PRODUCT.

Example:

5 rows (or groups) of 2  =  2 rows (or groups) of 5

A fun way for kids to illustrate and prove this Math Property is to let the kids use manipulatives (including some edibles) and make some ARRAYS.

Pennies: 5x2 = 2x5

  Smarties (candy): 5x2 = 2x5

Paper Butterflies: 5x2 = 2x5

Butterfly Punch

Other inexpensive manipulatives that you could use would be Unifix Cubes, erasers, paper clips, jelly beans, m&m's, or Cheerios.

After using the manipulatives, students could use their art supplies to draw and label other math equations that illustrate the Commutative Property of Multiplication.

Real World Arrays and Math

Math Arrays show multiplication using symbols, pictures, or objects/manipulatives lined up in rows and columns.

Yesterday's post was on using manipulatives with arrays in math to help children understand the CONCEPT of multiplication. Read the post here.

Children are curious! They will want to find arrays in real life. Here are a few examples of Real World Arrays.

Eggs  - 2 rows of  3  (2x3)

Bottled Water - 4 Rows of 6 (4x6)

Tic Tac Toe Board  -  3 Rows of  3  (3x3)
Pens  -  1 row of 8  (1x8)
Easter Eggs  -  3 rows of 2  (3x2)

After showing some real world arrays to the students, you may want to challenge them to find more examples in real life. Perhaps make it a game and see which student or team can find and identify the most real-life ARRAYS!
Students can list, sketch, tally, or take pictures of ARRAYS and identify the multiplication fact for each.

Using Arrays to Understand Multiplication

An ARRAY is a pictorial way  (using rows and columns) to represent math facts. Arrays can make understanding the concept of multiplication easier especially for visual learners.

You can use pictures, symbols, or manipulatives to illustrate number facts using arrays. Using manipulatives will help tactile learners.

Here are some examples of fun inexpensive manipulatives to use to make arrays.

Gummi Bears!

5 times 2 (5 x 2) is shown as 5 Rows of 2

Gummi Bears Array (5x2) - 5 Rows of 2

You can use LOTS of different inexpensive manipulatives to demonstrate multiplication facts using arrays.

(5x2) 5 rows of 2 - M & M Array

(5x2) 5 rows of 2 - Smarties Candy Array

(5x2) 5 rows of 2 - Butterfly Punched Shapes Array

If you have a punch, the kids can make paper shapes to use in their arrays.

3x2 - 3 Rows of 2 - made with dinosaur shapes

Dinosaur Punch

Here are a few more examples.

5x3 - with eraser dice - purchased at Dollar Tree

5x3 with gummi bears

5x3 with M & M's candy

Students might also like to draw and label their own arrays with crayons, markers, etc. after they have used the manipulatives.

3x3 - 3 rows of 3 = 9

Have fun with ARRAYS in math!
