Butterfly Life Cycle Stages
- egg
- caterpillar
- pupa
- butterfly
~ Enchanted Learning has a printout that illustrates the above steps. To teach children about the butterfly life cycle, you can print out the worksheet and the younger students can color and cut out the cards, then arrange them in the proper sequence. Students can also make a poster or book with the cards.
~ Older students can draw a large circle in their science notebooks. Next they should divide the circle into fourths. Then they should sketch and label the butterfly life cycle steps.
~ Adults can also set up a small butterfly house in their home/classroom. After purchasing the butterfly kit, you have to mail in the coupon (that comes in the kit) to receive your live caterpillars which will live in the butterfly house and continue their process of metamorphosis. It is just an amazing process! Kids LOVE it.
~Students can observe the animals and make daily entries (sketches and /or writing) into a science journal/notebook to document the butterfly life cycle.
~ There are lots of good books for children about butterflies that will teach/reinforce the butterfly life cycle. Plus I love posters, stuffed animals, stamps, and toys that can teach children science concepts in a fun way. Here is a sampling of resources available.
~ Scholastic Study Jams has a short slide show showing beautiful pictures of different animals (including the butterfly) with information about their life cycles
