Grow Seeds in Recycled Egg Cartons

Use recycled egg cartons to grow seeds with kids!

Growing grass in recycled cardboard egg cartons is pretty easy and inexpensive to do. Plus the cartons are biodegradable.

Directions:
  • Soak the seeds overnight in water.
  • Separate the egg container compartments if desired.
  • Make a small hole in the bottoms of the egg containers.
  • Have the students use a hand lens to observe the seeds.
  • The kids may want to draw a smiley face on the outside of their egg container.
  • Have the kids add soil to each egg container compartment.
  • Have the kids use their fingers to poke a few holes in the top layer of soil and drop in a few seeds in each hole.
  • Cover the seeds over.
  • Put the containers on a tray to collect extra water.
  • Put the seeds in a sunny spot and water daily (or as needed).
  • Students should use the hand lens again to continue observing the seeds as they start to grow.
  • As the grass grows, the kids may want to give their smiley face a "haircut" (the newly sprouted grass)!

Another idea for the recycled egg carton containers is to plant different seeds in each compartment. Have the kids observe all the seeds with a hand lens before planting. Have the kids label each compartment as they plant the seeds and compare the seeds as they grow.
