Teaching Geometry with Children's Literature

Combining children's literature and hands-on math is a wonderful way for children to become excited about learning! An excellent book for kids that teaches/reinforces 2-D shapes is Three Pigs, One Wolf, and Seven Magic Shapes by Grace Maccarone.

Three Pigs, One Wolf, Seven Magic Shapes (level 3) (Scholastic Reader, Math)

This book uses the story of The Three Little Pigs to teach geometry. It also uses the ancient Chinese Puzzle, The Tangram, to introduce geometric shapes and make the experience lots of fun for kids.

The book comes with a set of cardboard tangrams that the kids can use to recreate the characters in the book and create their own characters and shapes.

Math ideas and activities for kids by Marilyn Burns, an exceptional math teacher and author, are included in the back of the book. This is an added bonus!

The book comes with a warning!
"This Book Contains Math - And It's FUN!"

Another great book that teaches about 2-D SHAPES with TANGRAMS is Grandfather Tang's Story. (see an earlier post)

I also love Marilyn Burn's book The Greedy Triangle to learn/reinforce about 2-D SHAPES.
