This month's topic is MEASUREMENT!
Whenever we start a new topic with kids, it's always good to see what they already know about the topic. It helps us as teachers, parents, and educators to plan our lessons.
There are many ways we can do this. One way is to use a graphic organizer. Graphic Organizers are often used with Language Arts lessons but I also like to use them when starting a new MATH topic. Of course there are many types of graphic organizers. A popular one is the KWL chart. It has 3 columns.
A favorite of mine is the WEB or Concept Organization Chart. In the center, the teacher or students list the main topic or concept. In the surrounding areas any facts known about the topic are listed.
If the topic was Measurement, students could write Measurement in the middle circle. Then in the outside circles they could list any types of measurement that they were familiar with (subtopics) such as linear measurement (line), temperature, weight, liquid capacity, area, perimeter, etc. They could also add vocabulary related to the subtopic, examples, and even pictures.
I have both of these graphic organizers (plus others) posted on my website. If you are starting a new topic in any subject please download one or both. Just click on the link below then go to FREE WORKSHEETS.
Happy February!
