Geometry - What are Quadrilaterals?


All closed figures with 4 sides and 4 angles are QUADRILATERALS.


 


There are different types of Quadrilaterals: 


  • Parallelogram
  • Rectangle
  • Square
  • Rhombus
  • Trapezoid

After watching the videos, students could sketch and label pictures of the different types of quadrilaterals in their math notebooks.

Students could also check out their environment and find objects that are shaped like quadrilaterals. How many can they find? How many are squares, rectangles, trapezoids, etc.?

Geometry - Types of Lines


Our environment is filled with different types of lines from nature.













Here are some ideas to help children learn about the different types of lines.

~ Children can practice making the different types of lines with simple, inexpensive manipulatives such as the following: 



 Pencils

~ Students can look for examples of the different types of lines at home, school, or even outdoors in the environment. They could tally, count, list, sketch, or take photos of the lines.



















~ They could also use old magazines and the internet to find pictures of the different types of lines. They could sort and/or label the pictures and use them to make a book, poster, or slide show about LINES.

2D Shape People Crafts Activity


Math and Arts & Crafts Activity


Children might enjoy making these cute SHAPE PEOPLE as they learn about 2-D Shapes.



Olivia Octagon




Materials
  • Construction Paper
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Glue or Stapler
  • Google Eyes (optional)
  • Marker or crayons








Directions
  • Decide which 2-D shape(s) to create.
  • Draw or trace the shape onto construction paper. (This is the body.)
  • Recreate the shape 4 more times in a smaller version (for hands and feet).
  • Cut out the 5 shapes.
  • Cut 4 strips of paper (approximately 1 inch wide).
  • Accordian fold the strips. These will be the arms and legs.
  • Use glue or stapes to attach all the pieces.
  • Draw facial features and/or add google eyes.
  • Hang on wall, bulletin board, etc.
  • If desired, punch a small hole at the top and hang your shape person from the ceiling with a string, yarn, etc.
  • Children (or adults) can label the shapes (octagon, pentagon, etc.).
  • Students can use alliteration to give names to their shapes. (Examples: Olivia Octagon, Tommy Triangle, Paula Pentagon)

What is a Nonagon?







A Nonagon is 2-D shape and a polygon. 

Like other polygons it is a closed figure. A nonagon is not a common polygon! In fact a nonagon has 9 sides, 9 angles and 9 vertices (corners).

Having Fun with Circles - A Math Trick for Kids


Having Fun with 2-D shapes.

Can a quarter (a circle) fit through a hole the size of a dime (a circle) ???




 Teach this trick to the kids then they can amaze their friends!

Materials
  • dime
  • quarter
  • paper
  • pencil
  • scissors


Directions
  • Trace around a dime.
  • Cut out the inside of the circle.
  • Try to slip the quarter through the hole without tearing the paper. 


    Are you ready for the solution?

    Solution
    • Fold the paper across the diameter (center) of the circle.
    • Now sandwich the quarter between the halves of the circle.
    • Pull the sides of the paper upright.
    • The quarter will slip through!!!

    Why?

    • The circle turned into an ellipse!  That made the diameter of the hole Bigger!

    Attribute Blocks - Shapes for Learning Math Concepts


    Attribute Blocks are a set of Geometric Shapes.





    Attribute Blocks come in 5 shapes:
    • circle
    • triangle
    • square
    • rectangle
    • hexagon




    Each shape comes in a large and small size.




    Each large and small size comes in 3 colors: red, yellow, and blue.





    Attribute blocks are very versatile manipulatives for kids and can be used in many areas of math to teach many different math concepts including:
    • sorting
    • comparing/contrasting
    • patterning
    • classifying
    • identifying
    • sequencing
